Taleen Kali is a Los Angeles-based songwriter whose output comprises romantic punk and psychedelic indie pop songs, wrapped in a staunch riot grrrl ethos. Her latest single, “Only Lovers Left Alive,” is the second single from her debut full-length album out on March 3, 2023 via Dum Dum Records. “Only Lovers Left Alive,” constructs a dreamy tunnel of psychedelic surf rock with jangly guitars and layers of shoegaze tones, along with masterful production work by Jeff Schroeder of The Smashing Pumpkins.
In the press release for the single, Kali said, ““Only Lovers Left Alive” is about finding connection despite all odds. I wrote this song while walking through the deserted streets of L.A. during the early pandemic. There was nobody in sight, I hadn’t seen another human being for days, and I imagined what would happen if there was only one other person left alive in the world.”
The song and music video were primarily inspired by the Hollywood vampire flick of the same name, a film Kali has named their “favorite vampire movie of all time.” The music video, directed by Joe Rubenstein, pays homage to iconic tropes in horror films and supernatural folklore, with a major twist at the very end.
