(No More) Wire Hangrrr Fest – Feb. 15 at Trans-Pecos

I’m very excited to announce that A Grrrl’s Two Sound Cents is putting on our very first event on February 15th at Trans-Pecos – an abortion rights fundraiser and mini‑festival in collaboration with Thank God for Abortion called (No More) Wire Hangrrr Fest. It combines the two things I’m most passionate about – independent all ages shows and reproductive rights. All proceed’s from ticket sales will go directly to the Texas Equal Access Fund.

In this current political climate, joy and resistance is the most powerful combination we can channel into action. The reason we chose to do a mini music festival is so we could support feminist and queer artists and the fight for bodily autonomy for people with uteruses everywhere, not to mention that art is the most joyful act of resistance there is.

We chose TEA Fund as the beneficiary instead of a local org because living in New York today is largely still a luxury where reproductive care doesn’t feel completely obsolete – at least not yet. We also chose the name Wire Hangrrr Fest intentionally, knowing the hanger is a charged symbol in the history of abortion access. For us, using it isn’t about shock for shock’s sake; it’s about reclaiming an image that has long been used to illustrate what happens when safe, legal reproductive care is denied. There’s a long tradition, especially in riot grrrl and other feminist movements, of refusing to sanitize our language or soften the edges of our message. That irreverence was, and still is, a political tool: a way of refusing silence, refusing shame, and refusing to let systems of oppression dictate what is and isn’t “appropriate.”
