It’s no secret that one of the biggest longstanding issues in the music industry is access. Women today still are still significantly underrepresented in songwriting and production spaces, especially in the writers rooms where many songs for major artists come to fruition.
That is why this year, Amplify Arts Project (formerly Girls Rock) and the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Push-Up Bra LA are launching the Amplify Arts Project x Push-Up Bra LA Writers Camp, an intensive songwriting program designed to give teenage girls early access to professional writing rooms and mentorship.
The idea stemmed from conversations between Amplify founder Jen Baron, Amplify Program Coordinator Devin Davis, and Push-Up Bra LA founder Zealyn, who all shared a vision for creating a mentor program designed to give young women earlier access to professional songwriting spaces where they are mentored by established women in the music industry.
“Even as an adult working in music, it took me years to get into real writing rooms,” Baron said. “I was often the only woman in the room, and just figuring out how those spaces worked.”
The program creates a bridge between youth arts education and the professional music world, offering a rare chance for young women to step into creative spaces that have historically been more difficult for them to access than their male counterparts.
Applications for the Writers Camp will run until April 15 on the Amplify Arts Project’s website.
